We are so excited to welcome a new extension faculty member in the Department of Animal Science. Felipe Alves Correa Carvalho da Silva is our new Assistant Professor and Extension Livestock Specialist with an 80% extension and 20% research appointment. We are excited to have Felipe on our team and he is looking forward to meeting all of you.

Felipe Alves Correa Carvalho De Silva new Assistant Professor and Extension Livestock Specialist in the Department of Animal Science at NC State University.

Felipe grew up in a small agricultural town–Aquidauana, MS–known for being the gateway to the wetlands of the Brazilian Pantanal where the local economy relies majorly on agriculture and tourism. Belonging to the sixth generation of cow/calf producers in the largest wetland area of the world taught him the importance of sustainable agriculture to local development and environmental conservation. These experiences influenced him to pursue a career in Agriculture. Felipe received his Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Medicine from Sao Paulo State University, Jaboticabal. Upon graduation, he worked as an intern for research and extension groups at Colorado State University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Katherine Research Station in Australia. Felipe received his Master of Science in Reproductive Physiology from North Dakota State University where he investigated the effects of injectable trace minerals supplements in donor cows at the initiation of a superovulation protocol on embryo outcomes and pregnancy rates in recipient females. Most recently, he completed his Ph.D. program in Reproductive Physiology at the University of Florida where he investigated the modulation of uterine function in beef cattle.
Felipe’s interests involve applied and basic research aiming to overcome pregnancy losses during early gestation in cattle ultimately increasing reproductive efficiency in cow-calf operations. His outreach focus is to develop producer-driven programs targeting to increase reproductive performance and profitability in grazing systems further supporting beef producers. Felipe can be contacted through email at falvesc@ncsu.edu or by calling his office at (919) 515 – 4025.
