If you’re anything like me, you’ve been looking forward to fall since the middle of summer. Crisp mornings, a few turning leaves, new office supplies, breaking out some sweaters, and pumpkin carving; this year, fall and the return to school hasn’t been what we anticipated. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t embrace the spirit of fall or have some fall fun!

You’re probably itching for a new adventure as much as we are. While we’ve had a lot of fun connecting and running programs online, it’s important to remember to have some fun away from the screen. As the weather starts to cool, getting out for a hike is one of my favorite things to do. It’s also a great way to learn about the foliage native to eastern North Carolina. Check out our scavenger hunt to take with you for some added 4-H Fun! You can learn about different kinds of leaves, why pine cones are open or closed, and how to start your own field journal.

If you ask me, no season is complete without some garden fun. Getting your hands in the dirt and watching seeds sprout and mature to produce garden-fresh snacks is a great time. Fall gardens can be as colorful and delicious as spring and summer gardens. Now is the best time to get out and get some plants in for fall harvest. Some great plants for fall gardens are kale, collards, beets, radishes, some winter lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, carrots, parsnips, even kohlrabi. There are also some colorful flowers that can bring some fun variety to your garden scape, including, pansies and mums. Check out our fall garden guides on the website and while you’re there you can find some fun new recipes on any of our NC State University sites.

We also think it’s important to stay connected with friends. While the governor and CDC continue to recommend keeping socially distanced, we are continuing our virtual adventures. It’s fun and we get to see our friends. Some of our favorite adventures have been with Book Explorers. This fall we have another exciting lineup. First, we will be going to Spain! Where we will get to learn all about Barcelona, what football is in Spain, and see some incredible art. Then we’re off to Brazil, Thailand, and Denmark. You may be asking how we are going to read together, do crafts, and enjoy snacks from around the world if we are still meeting virtually.

Well, we can. Registration for Fall Book Explorers will open this week. Once you have registered you will have access to the web portal for that month’s book explorers, and be given a pickup date for your book explorers’ kit. Each kit will have everything you need to complete the craft, geography game, and snack.
