Newly Required NCDA&CS Respirator Fit Test Offered

— Written By and last updated by

As of January 1, 2017 the NCDA&CS now require new Worker Protection Standards (WPS) that state a respirator fit test and medical clearance card are necessary to mix, load, handle, or apply any pesticide that by product label requires the use of a respirator. Pesticide inspections completed by the NCDA&CS will ALSO now require documentation from anyone who mixes, handles or applies pesticides that require a respirator on the product label to have AN ANNUAL medical clearance and respirator fit test; regardless of whether or not you hold a pesticide license. We do not have a list of all the pesticides that require the use of a respirator on the product label on file, however we do know that Paraquat (Gramoxone), Lorsban, and Acephate do require a respirator on the product label. We highly encourage you to read the labels of ALL pesticides that you currently have to determine if they specifically require the use of a respirator.

Union County Extension is working with Occupational Team Solutions to offer fit testing and medical clearance certification on Wednesday, August 16th. The cost is $85 per person. We will have appointments in 15 minute increments, but YOU MUST PREREGISTER BY AUGUST 2ND BY CALLING DANA BRASWELL AT 704-283-3742 between the hours of 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Space is limited, so please call early to reserve a time slot. This certification will be valid for one calendar year.

THIS WILL BE THE ONLY OPPORTUNITY IN 2017 FOR YOU TO RECEIVE THIS TESTING THROUGH NC STATE EXTENSION. THE NEXT OPPORTUNITY FOR TESTING WILL BE SPRING 2018 AS THIS IS NOW A YEARLY CERTIFICATION.

Once you have registered, we will send you a packet with more information on filling out your medical evaluation questionnaire and what you need to do before your fit test.

If you have any questions, please call Andrew Baucom at 704-283-3739.
